Oakland Mother Killed By Gunfire

By Kelly Balamuth on March 26, 2015

A 30-year-old Oakland mother was killed last week when she was caught in the crossfire of a gun battle less than half a block from her home. She was returning home with her 7-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter when the stray bullet hit her in the back of the head.  The mother screamed at her children to run for safety, and they escaped into their house, hiding in fear as their mother died in front of their home.

Oakland police have arrested four men thus far, one 19-year-old who is recovering from a gunshot wound in the hospital, and three 29-year-olds.  This killing marks the 19th gun slaying in Oakland this year.

At Balamuth Law, our Bay Area wrongful death lawyers understand how devastating the loss of a loved one can be. When a death is caused by someone else’s carelessness or willful wrongdoing, such as reckless discharge of a firearm, it’s natural to agonize over why it happened, and desire nothing more than the semblance of closure.

A wrongful death suit is different from other types of personal injury claims because the person bringing the claim is not the actual victim, but the person (or people) left behind. The purpose of a wrongful death suit is to provide financial relief to family members who have been injured emotionally and financially as a result of their loved one’s death. A wrongful death claim may be pursued alongside a criminal case as a separate action.

For exceptional guidance and aggressive representation regarding the loss of a loved one, please do not hesitate to contact Balamuth Law.
