Bus Accident Takes Life of San Francisco Worker
A bus mechanic was killed recently when a bus he was working on rolled over him in a San Francisco bus yard, according to a recent article in The San Jose Mercury-News.
The worker was fixing a problem with a bus that is frequently rented to party and charter groups in the Bay area through an organization known as Cali Party Bus. Cali Party Bus is a company owned by Cal Experience LLC. According to the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal-OSHA), the 58-year-old mechanic had put the bus on a ramp so that he could look underneath it more easily. While he was examining the bus’s undercarriage, the bus rolled off the ramp, killing him.
Cal-OSHA officials opened an investigation of the accident the same day it happened, putting in additional work when it became clear that an initial investigation did not explain how the bus had rolled off the ramp. Cal-OSHA is now investigating the company that owned the bus to make sure that all mechanics and other staff are using required safety and health precautions whenever they work for the company, including when they examine or repair the company’s vehicles.
A Cal-OSHA spokesperson said that if violations are found, the company that owns the bus could face substantial monetary penalties and receive additional scrutiny from Cal-OSHA and federal OSHA until all mechanical hazard safety and health issues are corrected.
