Motorcyclist Dies in San Mateo Crash

By Kelly Balamuth on March 21, 2011

A motorcyclist was tragically killed on a crash in San Mateo recently, according to KTVU. The accident occurred early in the morning on Highway 101.

A Toyota Corolla crashed into the highway’s center barrier at about 5:10 a.m. and the driver reportedly fell asleep at the wheel. Once the car struck the divider, it was unable to move out of the road. Another motorist stopped and tried to signal traffic with a flashlight. However, a few minutes later a motorcycle, a tractor-trailer, and a car were involved in a collision nearby. Investigators aren’t completely sure whether the two vehicle accidents are related. In the second accident, the motorcyclist was killed. The tractor-trailer driver left the scene of the crash, although they may not have known they were even involved in an accident.

Although the San Mateo motorcycle accident investigation still needs to be completed, it appears that at least one accident appears to have resulted from the Corolla driver falling asleep at the wheel. About 28 percent of Americans have admitted to falling asleep at the wheel, according to the National Sleep Foundation, and over half have driven while drowsy. Driving while sleepy, even if you don’t fall asleep at the wheel, can cause slower reaction times, delays in processing information, and impairment in vision. If you are sleepy while driving, get off the road. Before leaving on a road trip, be sure to get a good night’s sleep. Take frequent breaks and naps if necessary. Taking these precautions can help prevent drowsy driving-related accidents.

In today’s fast-paced world, it can be easy to sacrifice sleep in order to get a few extra things done. However, if you are sleepy while behind the wheel, deadly consequences can result.
