Napa County Agricultural Workers Sickened by Hazardous Chemicals
In a story reported by KTVU, two female agricultural workers were taken to the hospital after being exposed to a hazardous chemical. The women were working at a nursery in an unincorporated area of Napa County when a chemical drifted near them and began causing respiratory problems.
When the Napa County Sheriff’s office responded to the call, the women were conscious and responsive but having breathing problems. Napa County firemen decontaminated the women before transporting them to a nearby hospital. Initially, authorities thought the chemical the women had encountered was sulfur but now they think it may have been pesticides used by nearby vineyards.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the health effects of pesticides depend on the type of pesticide and the level of exposure. Some pesticides affect the nervous system while others may irritate the skin or eyes. Others may affect the endocrine or hormone system. Some may even be carcinogens or cancer-causing.
Some professions require the use of or exposure to dangerous chemicals. However, employers and third parties, such as contractors, sub-contractors, and others, are required to implement the use of adequate safety measures and protective equipment to prevent injuries or accidents in the work place. When third parties or fellow employees are negligent in following safety regulations and an injury or death occurs, that party is liable for the damage caused.
