Red Light Runner Causes San Jose Crash, Injures Mom and 3 Children
Reckless driving is often at the cause of many car accidents. In San Jose, a 24-year-old motorist failed to yield to a traffic sign and made a right turn against a red light. According to the San Jose Mercury News, the traffic violation resulted in a police pursuit, and ended when the 24-year-old motorist ran a red light and broad-sided another vehicle. A 35-year-old driver and her three children were in the car. The downtown San Jose car crash resulted in six different people being injured – the 24-year-old driver and his passenger, and the 35-year-old driver and her three children.
According to the report, the 35-year-old mother sustained minor to moderate injuries. Her 15-year-old daughter was thrown from their vehicle upon impact, and was listed in critical condition at the time of the article’s release. The woman’s 12-year-old son has been listed in critical but stable condition, while the extent of her 6-year-old son’s injuries is unknown. The negligent motorist and his passenger also sustained minor to moderate injuries.
Traffic rules are meant to help protect us. When motorists choose to disregard these rules, grave injuries can occur. In the event that an individual is injured as the result of another motorist’s negligent action, the injured individual has the right to seek damages from the negligent motorist.

San Francisco Cab Runs Red Light, Injures 5
A recent article in the San Francisco Chronicle reported that an Arrow Cab taxi injured 5 people when the vehicle ran a red light in downtown San Francisco. The auto accident occurred at the intersection of Powell and Pine Streets at a little after 2:00 pm. The cab driver drove through the red light, striking a PT Cruiser.
The impact of the crash caused the PT Cruiser to spin out of control and to hit two pedestrians. The driver and passenger of the PT Cruiser were also injured. The cab eventually crashed into a fire hydrant and lodged into an apartment building.
For over two hours, the Muni cable car system at Powell Street was shut down as a result of the SF auto accident. The cab driver was also injured in the auto accident. Police intend to test the driver of the cab for traces of alcohol and substance abuse.
Another cab driver captured footage of the auto accident. The general manager of Arrow Cab plans to conduct an investigation into the action of the cab driver who caused the auto accident. The injured cab driver was an independent contractor for Arrow Cab.
Employers can be held liable for the negligent acts of independent contractors whom they hire if the independent contractors commit negligent acts while acting within the scope of their employment. Reckless driving can be considered a negligent act for which an independent contractor can be held liable for money damages to victims of an auto accident where the independent contractor was at fault. If an independent contractor is found to be liable, an employer could also be found liable for the actions of the independent contractor that caused the auto accident.
