How to Choose a Competent Accountant in the San Francisco Bay Area

By Kelly Balamuth on February 2, 2011

When a person or a business hires an accountant, they are anticipating that the accountant will stay up-to-date on current tax laws and keep their financial records in order. If an accountant makes a mistake, a client can suffer severe financial harm. According to INC Magazine, there are some steps to take that will help you make sure you find the right accountant for your business or your personal needs.

You first need to consider whether you should hire an accounting firm, or an in-house accountant. The answer probably depends on how much business you have – smaller businesses may just need a limited number of accounting services that would not justify hiring a full-time accountant.

Once you have decided that, you will need to examine each accountant’s qualifications. If an accountant is a CPA, they not only have an undergraduate degree, but also meet state requirements for certification and take classes each year to remain licensed. A Certified Management Accountant (CMA) may be right for companies that need the accountant to manage financial business performance.

Also consider what industries the accountant has worked for in the past. Accountants who specialize in certain industries are more apt to know the particulars of that industry, rather than requiring time to get up to speed on the issues. You also should consider the size of the accounting firm you wish to work with, if you aren’t hiring an in-house accountant. Do you feel comfortable with a sole practitioner or would you rather hire a large firm? This decision may depend on the complexity of the services you need from an accountant.
