4 Dead in Wrong-Way Crash on Highway 101
Early in the morning of Thursday, October 3rd, a wrong-way collision on the 101 ended in tragedy.
The ghastly collision occurred just north of Candlestick Point around the 3rd Street exit, according to California Highway Patrol officials. Around a half hour past midnight, the CHP received multiple calls regarding a possible wrong-way driver on the 101 freeway. Around five minutes after the initial calls, a CHP unit came across the fatal two-vehicle wreck involving a sedan and a taxi, which left all four people involved dead at the scene.
Based on the initial investigation, it seems that the driver of a Volkswagen sedan was driving southbound in the northbound lanes of the highway. The sedan crashed head-on into a Ford Escape taxi carrying a driver and two passengers.
The collision led to all northbound lanes of the freeway being shut down until CHP was able to get two lanes of traffic reopened just before 5 a.m. The remaining lanes were reopened at around 7 a.m.
Investigators are looking into whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
Dangers of Head-On Collisions
This case goes to illustrate the dangers inherent in head-on collisions. Accidents of this nature tend to end in tragedy, with head-on collisions accounting for only 2% of all traffic crashes, but 10% of traffic fatalities.
They are rightly considered one of the most dangerous accidents a person can be involved in. This is due to the force of two vehicles colliding at high speeds. Unfortunately, the individuals involved in this collision didn’t survive, but survivors of head-on collisions hardly ever leave the scene of an accident unscathed. Survivors could be left with serious and even permanent injuries, such as spinal injuries, brain injuries, broken bones, and more.
Surviving family members of victims killed in accidents can pursue compensation from the liable party and their estate to receive justice for the wrongful death of their loved ones.
