Four Injured in Overturn Accident at East Bay High School
Last August, a car containing four teenagers was involved in an accident inside the parking lot of an East Bay high school.
The accident took place outside of Concord High on 4200 Concord Boulevard shortly after school had been let out. According to police, the car was being driven in a reckless manner inside the parking lot of the high school before it overturned.
The four teenagers inside the vehicle suffered injuries that police spokesman Corp. Daniel Petty classified as “moderate to serious.” None of the resulting injuries sustained by the accident victims were considered critical or life-threatening.
It is no secret that teens are at a heightened risk of being involved in traffic collisions, and this incident serves as a reminder of that fact. A lack of driving experience and lowered perception of risk are prime factors that lead to higher accident rates among teen drivers.
Another factor that applies in this case, specifically, is that teens drivers with teen passengers in the car are at an even higher risk of being involved in a car accident. Research conducted by AAA found that the fatality rate for teens drivers who have teen passengers jumps by a whopping 51%, and that teens driving with passengers are more at-risk of being involved in an accident altogether.
Luckily, there were no fatalities in this incident, but it serves as a stark reminder that teen driving safety is no joke. Parents should make sure that their teen drivers are educated on the dangers of driving distracted or recklessly, and remind them to put safety first when navigating Northern California’s streets and roads.
