Serious Dog Bites May Have Killed California Woman

By Kelly Balamuth on January 21, 2011

According to KCRA, a 51-year-old woman was found dead in a yard in Colusa, California with severe dog bites. She was found at about 7 a.m. on Tuesday, January 4 with serious trauma to her body. At the time, a mixed-breed pit bull that belonged to the woman was loose in the yard. According to police, there were two dogs on the property when officials arrived. Although one of the dogs was known to be violent, that particular dog was inside a pen.

It’s unknown what time the victim was killed. She was last seen by her husband at 7 p.m. on the night before she was killed. A neighbor heard screams on Monday night, which could have been the victim.

Police still aren’t completely certain about what killed the victim. However, the dog bite marks were so serious, they may have been fatal. The dog that was loose in the yard was euthanized.

Unfortunately, dog bite attacks are not uncommon. Each day in the United States, about 1,000 people require emergency treatment for dog bites. Most of the deaths due to dog bites are caused by two breeds: pit bulls and Rottweilers. In a recent three-year period, 88 fatal deaths were recorded. Of those deaths, pit bulls or pit bull mixes were responsible for 52. Only 18 percent of the attacks occurred off the owner’s property.
